Simon Popp trained as a jazz drummer and draws on a wide range of percussion instruments to build his expansive sonic palette. The Bavarian artist’s insatiable musical curiosity resonates throughout his prolific output, both as a solo artist and through collaborative projects such as Fazer, 9ms, Poeji, and Polygonia & Simon Popp.
Balancing light and darkness, organic and synthetic sounds, his compositions unfold like a dance of subtle complexities, encouraging a more attentive and immersive mode of listening. Rather than foregrounding immediacy, his work invites depth, detail, and a heightened awareness of sonic texture and rhythm.
In 2023, Popp received the “Advancement Award for Music” from the City of Munich, and in 2025 he was nominated for the German Jazz Prize, further acknowledging his role in expanding contemporary percussion and experimental music practices.
